I am a literary scholar whose research centers on Asian American studies, postcolonial studies, and critical race studies. My research is motivated by the guiding principles of these fields, which see the study of race as critical for understanding the foundations of U.S. empire and for envisioning an antiracist, anticolonial, and feminist world. The ethos of care and community that I center in the classroom allow students to think critically about the connections between the personal and the systemic; how reflections about our own personal entanglements in larger systems of oppression can be opportunities for radical change. The readings in my courses prompt students to consider their racial, gender, and ethnic identities amongst other political positions, and I care deeply about helping students gain the tools and languages for describing and achieving visions of collective liberation. My classroom is a space for cultivating curiosity and asking questions, but just as importantly, it is a space for making sense of our own experiences, how we got here, and where we might dream to be in the future.
